| From the renowned company that created the Swiss Army Knife a century ago comes the Explorer knife/multi-tool in a gift box that is perfect for any camping or hiking enthusiast. This very useful, 16-function multi-tool knife has been included in the Design Collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The Explorer contains 16 stainless-steel tools that will be there when you need them, but not burden you with its size when you don't. The box can then be re-used to store special items. As with all Victorinox items, the Explorer is made to exacting standards of construction in Ibach, Switzerland at the same factory that has made Swiss Army knives for the last century. Victorinox focuses on every detail, from selecting the finest materials to performing the final inspection. In addition, each individual tool has been hardened in a different way to stand up to its designated use. About Swiss Army Knives In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The original product dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor for versatility. |

Quinticential pocket knife-Fantastic!

I have owned various incarnations of Victorinox Swiss Army knives for almost 3 decades. I think I am on my fourth now. Two lost and one given away. It lives in the pocket of my jeans every single day.
They change the model names and features around from year to year.
The Explorer is my current favorite and is essentially THE knife I have owned for all these years.
One of the major qualifying elements for me is the Phillips Head screwdriver, which I use regularly. Many of victorinox's models have this screwdriver coming out of the handle perpandicular to the handle's length. Which seems absolutely ridiculous. It's very awkard to use effectively in that configuration. Much better when it comes straight off the end of the handle, as a typical screwdriver does.
So that's what I look for first. The large knife blades, small knife blade is great. The scissors are great...more than a gimmick. I use them frequently. (Be careful not to overbend the spring when "adjusting"...although you can get replacements. I replaced mine in Rome several years ago at a tiny knife shop)
I use the magnifying glass as well...for a whole bunch of stuff. And more so now that my eyes are starting to go!
Essentially, everything on here has a purpose and is useful in my daily life, with the exception perhaps, of the fence-wire-puller thingy. It is a reasonable size and weight. No extra wood camping saw or chainsaw or anything else that's only going to get use once a year.
Manufacturing quality and finish on these are great. As they say, "Don't be fooled by imitations".
Perfect knife: Great features, nothing extraneous, good weight, great quality, and great price.
Don't lose it and you'll have it for the rest of your life.

The best utility tool ever

I highly recommend this product. I have owned a Victornox Explorer for over 30 years. I have found that the set of features on the Explorer has been the most versatile for climbing and hiking. I have used every tool on the knife in situations in the field that were critical. They have helped fix snowshoes, adjust crampons, remove slivers and find difficult to see Devil's Club thorns, helped start fires, open wine bottles, trim finger nails, cut moleskin, open cans, fix flashlights, tent poles and packs, clean fish, and countless other tasks. I have never had any tool on this knife break.
This year we are hiking the Pacific Crest Trail and my hiking companion did not have a knife. What better birthday gift than an Explorer. I know it will serve him as well as mine has. |

| I bought this for my 6 year old. She was admiring my 25 year old Climber knife on when I showed her the other knives she wanted one with a magnifier glass. The price was unbeatable at twenty bucks. This knife sell for forty dollars every where else. I wish the box was tin instead of painted plastic. |

| I bought this as a present for myself as it was on sale at Amazon and I could not be more pleased. Good heft and enough tools to make me feel like my Boy Scout days. A great tool for campers who want an all-in-one type for trips. You can open or repair most anything with this - I say buy it !! |

| I bought these as Xmas presents for my staff this year. They loved them. It is the most useful knife that you can buy for its size. The cork puller is the greatest when you find a killer deal on a cheap wine and you want to taste it before you commit to a whole case. It also has a real phillips screw driver that you will find 100 uses for. |
For when your boy becomes a man

| After checking with his parents and a great deal of cautionary instruction, I gave this to my godson for his 12th birthday. At the birthday party, men of three generations examined the knife with the boy and taught him how to use the various tools. This was particularly great because they all had stories connected to a Swiss Army knife that they shared, which might not have been told but for this perennial of common experience. Of course, I would not recommend this as a gift for just any 12-year-old boy. But for this boy, it served as a marker of maturity that was earned and appreciated. |
Best overall Swiss Army Knife, in my opinion

I have had a Swiss Army knife with me continuously for more than 40 years now. I have used lots of models, but of all the ones I have had, this one has the most useful combination of tools for daily use.
The magnifier is great-once you have one, you will wonder how you got along without it. In a pinch, you could probably start a fire with it. The scissors are very good and useful, as is the phillips driver. The can opener also does a great job as a staple remover. In fact, all the tools are useful, except for the silly 'hook'.
According to a book on these wonderful knives, the hook is designed to aid in carrying packages, you know, those ones wrapped with string from the post office.
Ah, I can just see it now, a young Swiss fraulein walking through Alpine meadows, with blue skies and puffy white clouds overhead, carrying her string-wrapped package. Why, I expect her to break out in song and to start skipping any minute. OK, so in the real world the post office will reject a package if it is wrapped with string, but hey, if they ever change their mind, you will be ready!
OK, so the hook is a waste. But the other tools, especially if you add the little screwdriver the deluxe models has (lots of websites carry them-look for swiss army knife replacement parts) is the best combination of useful tools versus size going. Anything more useful is too big to carry DAILY, and fewer tools limits the usefulness.
And Victorinox, if you are listening, replace the hook with a finger nail cleaner/file. |
What can I say?

| What can I say, it's a Swiss Army knife and the quality is great. Very sharp too, my son cut his finger the first day he had it. Some just have to learn the hard way. |
